Chip shortages – what this means for you

Currently chip manufactures are unable to keep up with the demand for chip processors. We first saw the demand and shortage hit the computer market with CPUs and especially GPUs in high demand. So much so that GPUs are selling for about 3 times their value.

Of course chip manufactures are not the only one’s to blame as there have also been supply chain issues from acquiring the raw materials for manufacturing to the supply chain exporting the products to the retailers.

You may be thinking, well I don’t build computers, much less even know what a GPU is (Graphics processing unit aka graphics card) why should I care or better yet, how is this shortage going to affect me?

Well the shortage is now begging to show its ugly face within other markets, such as household appliances, and even in the automotive industry. That toaster oven you have, well more than likely there is a processing chip in it. Your washing machine, microwave, headphones, television, phones, basically most modem electronic has a processing chip inside. If you are in the market for one of those electronics, it may become harder to find or the prices may be inflated due to the demands. Hope that one of your appliances/electronics doesn’t brake until after 2022.

Most chip manufactures and buyers of chipsets for their products are expecting for this to be the norm for the next two years, potentially bleeding into the first quarter of 2023. This shortage was of course Covid related and is primarily to blame with lockdowns and restrictions. Because the world is slowly going back to normal, and at a slow pace, we can say that the estimate of 2023 is accurate.

Until then we are left with the choice of buying what we need now and possibly paying an absurd price for the product or waiting till the supply can meet or exceed the demand and paying closer to the true value of the product.
