If you have not heard about this wonderful series, I don’t know where you have been but it is still not too late to get into this wonderful series produced by Dallas Jenkins. Released in 2019, The Chosen has found its way onto my list of shows I am excited about, obviously since I am writing about it. The Chosen, while not exactly Biblical, as in word for word ,miracle for miracle, draws heavily from the book of John. Although some locations do not match up with the accounts in the Bible and its timeline it is made clear at the start of the first episode the reason for this. The development of the series seems to rely heavily on historical context as well. All that to say, for Christian entertainment The Chosen should be on your list and here is why:
While there are some scenes that may make it feel like a sitcom, Jenkins makes sure that there is a reason why it is included even if we don’t see it at first. Know that there is a reason for the scene and it will help spread the Gospel which is centered around Christ. It most definitely helps the viewer to understand the historical context and difficulties Jesus may have faced when starting His ministry. It also allows the viewers to be reminded that those he chose to follow him as his disciples were ordinary everyday flawed and sinful people like you and me. This series highlights the story of the disciples and other key people mention in the Gospels, breathing new insights into what it could have been like following the Messiah.
I of course am going to watch with careful eyes, as I do with any form of Christian media. So far from what I can see Jenkins seems to desire that the Gospel be shared and doesn’t deviate much from the Word. I would highly recommend watching this series and to read the book of John along side the series to help bring some Biblical context.
