The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention decided to change course today on only some of its mask guidelines. It is now recommending that vaccinated people can return to wearing masks indoors in the areas of the U.S. where the delta variant of the coronavirus is causing a large spike in cases. Specifically for all teaches, staff, students and visitors at schools across the nation.
However, masks are not the only issue on President Joe Biden’s agenda, he hinted that his administration is looking into the possibility of vaccine requirements for federal workers. This comes a day after the VA set a vaccine requirement for its healthcare workers and days after Los Angeles and St. Louis reverted back to mask guidelines.
The guidelines state that counties experiencing more than 50 new cases per 100k people within a week are recommend to implement in door mask mandates.
Thoughts
There are a few things to consider given the current state of Covid cases and the delta variant:
How many people have been vaccinated and have caught other variants including the delta variant.
How many individuals who caught the delta variant was unvaccinated vs those who were vaccinated. And should those who have had Covid and not been vaccinated count as “naturally vaccinated” thus adding to the total number of vaccinated people? In addition to this are antibody test data being captured?
Would that then make a difference on how we proceed forward with our guidelines and if we have reached heard immunity. There are still so many questions left to be answered.
I am unsure how this will affect everyday life and if those who have already adjusted to not wearing masks will be willing to comply with other types of establishments who will choose to reintroduce mask guidelines such as restaurants and grocery stores. I can only imagine that this will cause some grief for those who don’t want to wear a mask because they are already vaccinated and those who want to wear a mask even though they are already vaccinated. My hope is that we don’t go back into lockdowns like we are seeing in other parts of the world. Also that Novavax would be approved for emergency use here in the United States.
